Taraba State University

Taraba State University was established on 24th January 2008 by Law No. 4 of 2008, passed by the Taraba State House of Assembly. The Executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency, Pharm. Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, assented to the Law on 28th January 2008.

The University is committed to providing ready access for the State's indigenes to higher education and relating its courses to the social, cultural, and economic needs of the people of Taraba State.

The University commenced academic activities in the 2008/2009 academic session with over 582 students registered at the School of General and Preliminary Studies. Full-time undergraduate programs commenced in the 2009/2010 academic session with over 40 academic staff and 476 students, registered in eighteen departments.

Today, Taraba State University has grown significantly, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and distance learning programmes across nine faculties, with thousands of students and hundreds of dedicated academic staff.

Our History

History of Taraba State University

2004
The Idea is Born

The idea of establishing a State University for Taraba State was first mooted when Rev. Jolly T. Nyame was State Governor. Feasibility studies were conducted but the proposal was not implemented.

2007
Technical Committee Established

On 14th June 2007, Governor Pharm. Danbaba Danfillani Suntai set up a Technical Committee on the Establishment of Taraba State University. The Committee submitted its report on 2nd October 2007.

2008
University Established

On 24th January 2008, Taraba State University was established by Law No. 4 of 2008. The Executive Governor assented to the Law on 28th January 2008.

2008/2009
First Academic Session

The University commenced academic activities with over 582 students registered at the School of General and Preliminary Studies. The pioneer Vice-Chancellor was Dr. Ahmed Usman Jalingo.

2009/2010
Full-time Undergraduate Programmes

Full-time undergraduate programmes commenced with over 40 academic staff and 476 students registered in eighteen departments.

Present
Continued Growth

The University has witnessed significant growth with nine faculties, over 42 departments, thousands of students, and numerous undergraduate, postgraduate, and distance learning programmes.
